Remembering Shawkat Osman
87th birth anniversary of the litterateur observed

On the occasion of the 87th birth anniversary of litterateur Shawkat Osman, recitation group Shwanan organised a cultural and discussion programme at the Liberation War Museum, Monday last.

Reminiscing the writer, chief guest of the programme poet Shamsur Rahman said, "We owe many things to him which nobody else could give us. Although his main expertise was in short stories and novels specifically in the satiric genre, he also had creativity in writing poems."

To comment on the creations of Shawkat Osman, professor Anisuzzaman said, "He generated social awareness through artistic but clear and straightforward messages in his creations. We will remember him not only for his creativity but also for his commitment for the society--the commitment towards life to make it more meaningful and special."

The eldest son of the author, Bulbon Osman recalled many incidents related with his father and elaborated on his boldness. He said, "His ready wit and firmness in sticking to his principles was enviable." Bulbon recalled that his father used to tell them, "It is not important what you have but who you are". "And that was the guideline of bringing up his children," said Bulbon.

Among others literary personality Selina Hossain, Shawkat Osman's son Yafes Osman and Rupa Chokrovorty of Shwanan also spoke on the occasion.

Ahkam Ullah recited from Shawkat Osman's short story Janani Janmobhumi. His passionate recitation from the story, which portrays the brutality and insanity of the Pakistan Army during the country's Liberation War, moved the audience. Singers Jhuma Khondokar, Shama Rahman, Anupam Paul and others rendered songs, while Rasna Rafiq and Farha Shahwar Jhunjhun performed Kathak. The programme ended with the screening of a documentary on Shawkat Osman.
