Shaheed Asad Day will be observed across the country today commemorating the supreme sacrifice of the student leader and the days of mass uprising of 1969 that led the nation towards independence.On the day, Asad was killed in firing by Pakistani forces in front of Dhaka Medical College Hospital while protesting their repression on the people of the then East Pakistan. The autocratic regime of Field Marshal Ayub Khan was forced to step down amid a mass revolt fuelled by the incident. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina gave special messages commemorating the supreme sacrifice and contribution of Asad. To mark the day, Shaheed Asad Parishad has chalked out elaborate programmes, including the placing of wreath at the memorial plaque of Asad in front of the DMCH in the morning and his grave at Shibpur in Narsingdi on the day. The Parishad will organise a discussion meeting at the Liberation War Museum auditorium at Segunbagicha in the city at 3.00pm on January 28.
