Corruption discourages foreign investment
Hasina tells Korean envoy

Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Seong Ung Park yesterday called on Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina at her Sudha Sadan residence.They discussed Korean investment and economic cooperation between Dhaka and Seoul. During the meeting, Hasina sought more Korean investment in Bangladesh. She, however, said that corruption and criminal activities have been discouraging foreign investors to invest in the country as well as tarnishing the nation's image. Hasina also mentioned the recent step of the government to appoint an administrator to the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), saying, "The government is trying to establish political control in business institutions." The Korean Ambassador said there is enough opportunity of expanding investment and trade between the two countries. He expressed sorrow over the August 21 grenade attack on Sheikh Hasina and observed that the incident should be properly investigated. Former Ambassador Farooq Ahmed Chowdhury and Saber Hossain Chowdhury were present at the meeting.
