Six lynched, 7 others murdered in 4 days


Six people including three alleged operatives of Jagrata Muslim Janata, Bangladesh (JMJB) were lynched and seven others murdered across the country in the last four days.

A mob beat three JMJB men to death after the Islamist militants killed an Awami League leader of Taherpur municipality and shot at a union parishad chairman in Bagmara upazila Saturday night, our Rajshahi correspondent reports.

Eleven JMJB cadres intercepted Mokbul Mridha, chairman of Sripur Union Parishad and also vice-president of the union unit of Awami League (AL), at Kuthibari while he was returning home from Sripur bazaar at 8:30pm.

"The attackers swooped on us and hit Mridha with iron rod, then shot at him," said Yusuf Ali Pramanik, who was accompanying Mridha during the attack.

Hearing the victim's scream, locals chased the attackers who hurled bombs at them, killing one person and injuring at least 30 others. The dead was identified as Mahbub Hossain Dewan, 25, a ward-level AL leader of Taherpur municipality.

Nine of the injured were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

The mob then caught three attackers and beat them to death.

The three were identified as Abdur Rahman, 20, a student of Taherpur Madrasa, Ibrahim Hossain, 18, an SSC examinee from Bhabaniganj High School and Abdul Baki Murad, 22, of Pallapara in Bogra's Adamdighi upazila.

Locals said the dead were operatives of JMJB, an Islamist outfit led by Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai active in the northern region.

Rapid Action Battalion later visited the spot and seized three pistols, two bullets and a bomb from there, said sources.

2 LYNCHED IN DHAKA
A mob beat Monir, 22, a mentally challenged youth, to death in Shyampur in the capital after he stabbed three people including the imam of a local mosque on the Eid day.

Monir, a third-year student at Jagannath University College and resident of Jurain, came out of his house at 7:00am with a knife and stabbed Mohammad Yunus, imam of Jakirulla Jam-e-Masjid and two others when the imam was preparing for Eid prayers.

A mob caught Monir and beat him severely. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 8:00am.

Monir, who was preparing to go abroad for higher studies, got deranged a couple of months ago, his cousin Dipu said.

In another incident at East Shyampur, locals beat Hariram, 25, another deranged youth, after he stabbed Billal, 15, and Nowab Miah, 50, at around 12:00noon on the Eid day.

Catching him with a knife, locals beat him with bamboo sticks before police rushed to the place. The police found him dead and sent the body to Mitford Hospital for autopsy.

In Lalbagh, the police recovered the body of Mohammad Babul, 35, an alleged drug addict, on the Eid day evening. It was unclear how he was killed.

KHULNA
In Khulna, a mob lynched an alleged robber, Pabitra, 30, on Sunday night at Patherbazar under Khanjahan Ali thana, our correspondent reported.

The police said they caught Pabitra with a revolver from a Jessore-bound passenger bus during routine checking at 11:30pm Sunday night.

As the policemen dragged him down from the bus, angry locals snatched him from the police and beat him mercilessly, said officer-in-charge of Khanjahan Ali Police Station.

Pabitra was declared dead when the police rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital at 4:30am yesterday.

SATKHIRA
Our Satkhira correspondent reports: A gang of miscreants killed Bhola Sheikh, 50, a shrimp cultivator in Jyotindranagar village in the district on Sunday night.

Bhola went to sleep in a hut at his shrimp enclosure on that night but was not found there the following morning, the police said quoting the victim's relatives.

The floor of the hut was stained with blood and the killers took away Bhola's body, according to the police.

JHALAKATHI
In Jhalakathi, assailants slaughtered rice trader Abdul Aziz, 55, at South Tarabunia village in Rajapur upazila on the Eid day. The killers intercepted Aziz at around 12:30pm when he was returning home after saying Eid prayers. They stabbed him mercilessly and then slaughtered to confirm his death.

PABNA
In Pabna, the slaughtered body of an absconding criminal, Babul, 24, also an operative of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party, was recovered from a roadside ditch at Bhitamud village in Faridpur upazila on Sunday morning.

The police suspect Babul's associates slaughtered him following a factional feud.

JESSORE
Our Jessore correspondent reports: The villagers of Kashimpur in Sarsha upazila found the body of Kota, 35, who used to drive motorbike for money, on the Eid day.

Locals and police suspect some people hired him and killed him to snatch the motorbike.

Gopalganj
A UNB report says: A young man died and four others were injured in a bomb explosion on Sunday night in Naiarbari village of Kotalipara upazila, about 40km east of the town.

Majid Molla, 27, died on the spot at about 11-30pm and the family buried him before the dawn giving rise to suspicion about the cause of the explosion.

Police Super Mirza Abdullah Hil Baqi said they suspect that Majid and his accomplices were making bombs one of which exploded leading to his death.

Identity of the injured was not known.
