Road accidents kill 20, injure 110 in 3 days

Twenty people, including seven children, died and 110 others were injured in road accidents in the capital and seven districts in the last three days.A Dhaka bound passenger bus from Tangail collided with a black taxicab at Abdullahpur in Uttara at about 1:30pm on Sunday, killing four people, three of a family, and injuring five others. The dead are Sushil Kar, 35, driver of a private company in Chittagong, his daughter Tithi Kar, 5, and niece Swarupa, 10, a student of Uttara Udayan School, and cab driver Shafiqul Islam, 25. Taxicab driver Shafiqul died on the spot and the other three succumbed to their injuries soon after admission to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). The injured were admitted to Metropolitan Hospital at Mohakhali. The bus driver managed to flee. In Demra, two bicycle riders were crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway Sunday evening. The victims are Milon, 20 and Haider, 20 of Demra area. Meanwhile, police recovered two unidentified bodies -- one from Shaheed Nazrul Islam Sarani and the other from Bijoynagar road -- in the early hours yesterday. They sent the bodies to the DMCH morgue for autopsy. DMCH morgue and police sources said the two might have been killed in road mishaps. Sherpur: Three people died and nine were injured when a bus rammed a tempo at Nabinagar in Sherpur town yesterday. The dead were identified as Abu Hanifa, 45, Sufia, 70, and Azizur Rahman, 12. Police and witnesses said the Dhaka-bound bus dashed and smashed the tempo at about 10:30am. Hanifa died on the spot, Sufia on the way to Sadar Hospital and Aziz died at the hospital. The injured were admitted to hospital. Of them, condition of two -- Masum, 7, and an unidentified man aged about 20 -- was stated to be critical. Meanwhile, a young man, Tarun, 21, was seriously injured when a truck knocked his motorcycle on the Sherpur-Dhaka highway at around 11:30am on the same day. A boy named Saidee, 7, was also injured critically as a speeding microbus hit him at Bhatshala in Sherpur Sadar upazila on the day. Habiganj: One unidentified man was killed and 20 others were injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway near a gas field at Rashidpur in Bahubal upazila on Sunday. Police and locals said the accident occurred at noon when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus skidded off the highway and fell into a ditch. The injured were admitted to Srimangal and Bahubal heath complexes. Kushtia: One person was killed and 30 others were injured as a truck carrying cattle-traders crashed into a roadside ditch near Kushtia Fish Hatchery in Sadar upazila on Saturday. The deceased, Amirul Islam, of Nandiarchar village in the sadar upazila was among some 70 cattle-traders returning home by the truck after selling sacrificial cows in the capital. Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to the Kushtia General Hospital. Faridpur: A young man and a woman died and 25 were injured when a Dhaka bound bus from Barisal fell into a roadside ditch at Purbo Sadardi near Bhanga on Sunday night. The dead, Sultana Begum, 25 and Liton, 24, of Rajapur, Jhalakati died soon after admission to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital. The injured are now undergoing treatment at the hospital. Survivors said the driver of the bus lost control over the steering. Gaibandha: Two pedestrians were killed when a loaded truck hit them on the Bogra-Rangpur Highway at Boalia on Sunday, according to our correspondent. The deceased are Asitan Bewa, 60 and Rani, 8. In another accident, Turjo, 10, son of Jahangir Alam of Masterpara of Gaibandha, was killed when a speeding truck dashed a rickshaw from behind in the town yesterday. Meanwhile, 21 people were injured when a Dhaka-bound passenger coach collided with another bus in Gaibandha town on the same day. The coach driver, Omar Faruk, and a passenger, Shaheed, were rushed to Sadar Hospital in a critical condition. Patuakhali: Two girls, identified as Moyna, 8, and Salma, 9, were injured in a road accident near Moukaran Bridge in Badarpur area of Patuakhali town Sunday morning. Our correspondent quoted police and locals as saying Moyna and Salma were run over by a speeding Barisal-bound bus while they were crossing the road at about 9:30am. Immediately after the accident, locals damaged six buses. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, police seized the bus from Lebukhali Ferry ghat. A case was filed. Jessore: Russel, 6, son of Ashraful of Kaliganj Police Station of Jhenidah district, was run over by a bus on Sunday when he was crossing Jhenidah-Magura road near Bahadurpur village in Sadar Police Station, according to our correspondent.
