Ban on Rickshaw
Moghbazar residents in serious trouble

The traffic department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday made the Bangla Motor to Malibagh road off-limits to rickshaws, leaving the rickshaw passengers of the surrounding areas virtually in island.

As people from Moghbazar area can not cross or enter Mymensingh Road through Bangla Motor or Sonargaon points with rickshaw, they are really in trouble due to lack of alternative transport, locals said.

Besides, the road towards Kakrail has also been made off-limits to rickshaws.

"Rickshaws were our only means of transport in this road, but now it has become hard for us to travel," said a local resident.

With a view to reducing jam, the traffic department has plans to make some more thoroughfares of the capital free from non-motorised vehicles this year.

"Plans are in place to ban rickshaws from some other identified roads of the capital," Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka told the BBC Bangla Service last night.

As the next step, the road from Science Laboratory via Elephant Road, Shahbag and Press Club to College Road next to Bangabazar will be made off-limits to rickshaws, the mayor said.

In December last year, Kalabagan Russel Square to Azimpur via New Market road was made off-limits to rickshaws, notably reducing traffic jam in the area.

On Mirpur Road between Gabtali to Russel Square, plying of rickshaws has been barred since December 20 in 2002.

Besides they have plans to ban rickshaws from Progati Sarani via Rampura to Mouchak, and from Rokeya Sarani to Farmgate in phases, Dhaka Transport Coordination Board sources said.
