Dhaka gets additional water from Ganges

Bangladesh has received 68,178 cusec and 54,079 cusec of Ganges waters respectively during the first and second circles of January '05 against the indicative share of 56,582 cusec and 45,112 cusec according to water sharing treaty with India.

Joint River Commission (JRC) sources said Bangladesh received the surplus water from the Ganges during the 10-day circle, as the flow of thez river was over 75,000 cusec.

As per treaty signed in 1996, Bangladesh and India are entitled to get equal share of the water when the flow will be less than 70,000 cusec during dry season from January 1 to May 31 every year.

And, when the flow will be over 70,000 cusec but not more than 75,000 cusec, then Bangladesh will get 35,000 cusec water and the rest will go to India. And, when the flow will be over 75,000 cusec India will get 40,000 cusec water and Bangladesh will get the rest of the flow.

The sources said the flow of the Ganges during the first 10 days of January (first circle) was 96,582 cusec and during the second 10 days (second circle) was 85,112 cusec, facilitating India to get its indicative share of 40,000 cusec and Bangladesh to get the additional flow.
