Arrest of Seven Youths
Security beefed up in Gopalganj

Security measures have been stepped up at all vulnerable points in Gopalganj district following the arrest of seven youths suspected of being activists of an Islamic militant organisation.Police picked up the youths aged between 18 and 25 from different places of Kotalipara and Tungipara on Wednesday. They were identified as Md Tariqul Islam and Abdur Noor Saidee of Chapainawabganj, Md Masum of Narayanganj, Md Shawkat Sarder of Dakop, Khulna, Md Abdullah of Mollahat, Bagerhat, Md Isharat Ali of Chitalmari, Bagerhat, and Md Selim Sarder of Itagacha, Satkhira. Police also recovered five motorcycles, a 9mm revolver, two bullets, a dagger and an axe from their possession. The youths were taken on a 15-day remand and being quizzed about a robbery committed at the Brac office in Kotalipara at 9.00pm on January 17, said OC Md Shah Kabir of Kotalipara Police Station. According to police, the youths said they are students of different madrasas but denied their involvement in the robbery. The OC said the arrestees would be sent to the joint interrogation cell (JIC) for further questioning. A group of armed robbers stormed the Brac office, confined the officers and employees to separate rooms and looted six motorcycles, five cell phones, two bicycles, five wrist watches, three gold rings and Tk one lakh. They also exploded three hand bombs while fleeing the scene, police said. Three cases were filed with Tungipara and kotalipara police stations.
