AL procession, rally attacked 23 injured

At least 23 people were injured in clashes between the activists of the ruling BNP and the Awami League (AL) in Barisal and Noakhali yesterday.

Our Barisal correspondent reported that a mouring procession brought out by the local unit of the Awami League came under attack by the BNP cadres in front of the Udayan School in the city at about 3:00pm, leading to a clash between the sides.

Police dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control.

Eight people, including a police constable and a photojournalist, were injured during the clash.

Barisal district and city units of the AL condemned the attack on their peaceful procession by the ruling party cadres.

In Noakhali, 15 AL activists were injured in an attack on a party condolence meeting at Kabir Hat yesterday, according to the UNB.

Local Awami League organised the meeting to condole the death of former finance minister and AL leader SAMS Kibria who was killed in a grenade attack in Habiganj on January 27.

Three of the injured were admitted to General Hospital in a critical condition.
