Russel inspires BD A

The Bangladesh A team took a 2-0 lead in the four-match series against the United Arab Emirates with a 64-run victory at the Sharjah Stadium on Thursday.

Fresh from an eight-wicket win, the second string national side scored 235-9 in the back-to-back day-nighter with Shamsur Rahman top-scoring with 78.

Left-arm pacer Syed Russel then claimed five wickets for 26 to book the home side for 171 in 43.2 overs.

The hosts never recovered from the early loss of the openers, who departed with just 23 runs on the board. Number four Khuram Khan's 58 kept them in the chase as they reached 111-4 by the 31st over.

But Russel bagged three wickets in a fiery second spell as the UAE crashed to 119-7. The tail fought with Mohammed Tauqir making a quickfire 22 off 25 balls but that was not enough for the hosts to pull off an upset.

Khuram, who hit five fours and two sixes in 80 balls, was eventually dismissed by Bangladesh speedster Shahadat Hossain Rajib.

Saqib Al Hassan, who did not contribute much with the bat, chipped in with 2-30 from seven overs.

Earlier, Saqib and one-down Sanwar Hossain were dismissed cheaply but opener Shamsur made up for missing out in the previous match where he scored just one.

Shamsur, who smashed six fours and one six, had an able ally in Raqib Al Hassan (38 off 52 balls) during an 84-run stand for the third wicket.

However, at one stage it seemed that the visitors would end up with a below-200 total but stand-in captain Shahriar Nafees ensured they set up a challenging target with a 22-ball 40 studded with five boundaries.

The left-hander's blistering knock helped the A team rattle 81 runs in the final ten overs with 53 coming in the last five with help of Mohammad Sharif, who settled for 17 not out off 11 balls.

Javid Ismail was the pick of the UAE attack with 3-41 while Ahmed Nadim and Khuram Khan took two wickets apiece.

The third match will be held tomorrow at the same venue.

The Bangladesh A will travel to Zimbabwe following this tour to play three Tests and five one-day matches.
