On the 10th Muharram in 61 Hijri year, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), along with his family members and companions, embraced martyrdom at the hands of Yazid's forces in the desert of Karbala to uphold the cause of Islam and the teachings of the prophet.

The day is a public holiday.

Special prayers will be offered on the day seeking world peace and the unity and welfare of the Muslim Ummah. The blessings of Allah will also be sought for continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country.

On the eve of the day, President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina have urged the Muslims to be imbued with the spirit of sacrifice for just causes.
