Inaction of the government has encouraged the killings of pro-liberation forces including legislators, teachers and journalists, said the speakers at a memorial discussion yesterday. The discussion was organised to mark the 6th death anniversary of Kazi Aref Ahmed, a freedom fighter and former president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, at the National Press Club in the city. Kazi Aref and four other leaders were shot dead at an anti-terrorism rally at Kalidaspur school ground at Doulatpur in Kushtia in February 1999. The speakers demanded immediate trial of the killers who are at large even six years after the gruesome murder. They urged all people irrespective of their party affiliations to be united to resist the fundamentalist and communal forces. "Different militant groups are now operative in the country with strong network to capture power through an Islamist revolution," said Mujahidul Islam Selim, general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh. Advocate Rahmat Ali MP of Awami League, Kazi Masud, brother of Kazi Aref, Fazlur Rahman Babu, MA Jalil and Mohammad Hossain Tuku also took part in the discussion presided over by Mokhlesur Rahman Golap.
