AL lawmakers demand speaker's resignation
BDNEWS, Dhaka
Lawmakers of the main opposition Awami League yesterday said the speaker should resign for his 'inability to protect the rights of the parliament members'. "The speaker, despite our repeated request, has failed to take any step to protect the rights of the members. He did not even telephone the injured Opposition Lawmaker and Whip Mirza Azam after police mercilessly roughed him up Saturday," said opposition Chief Whip Abdus Shaheed. Addressing a briefing at the parliament office of the deputy leader of opposition in the evening, Shaheed said they have repeatedly informed the speaker about violation of rights of the lawmakers, but their plea went in vain. He said Abdur Razzak MP's car was attacked in his constituency and police assaulted Tanjim Ahmed Sohel MP when parliament was in session. The opposition lawmakers will meet the speaker to express their grievances, he said. AL Presidium Member Suranjit Sengupta said the prime minister and the state minister for home let loose police against opposition lawmakers them and damaged the image of the parliament as well as the State. There is no favourable situation to speak in the House, he said. He, however, said, "We will join the House anytime." The main opposition has been abstaining from the ongoing session as their plea for deferring President's speech after a condolence motion for the assassination of former finance minister and AL lawmaker SAMS Kibria was turned down. M Amanullah MP, Faruk Khan MP, Tanjim Ahmed Sohel MP and Motahar Hossain MP were present at the briefing.
