Five satellite cities to be developed

The government is going to develop five satellite cities in Savar, Keraniganj and Gazipur to ease the housing problem facing the middle-income groups.About two lakh families will benefit from the new satellite cities on about 6,000 acres of land, sources said. The ministries of land and public works are jointly developing these satellite cities, divided into several plots of three katha, five katha and seven katha. The plots will be distributed among the middle-class families through lottery. "The government will employ local and international developers to build the cities," said Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on land ministry Advocate Mahbubur Rahman. Two satellite cities will be developed on 2,500 acres covering Chhoto Kaliakoir, kumarkhoda, Bhoumik, Chandanpur, Tetuljhora unions under Savar upazila, one on 200 acres at Shonakanda in keraniganj, one on 800 acres in Pirojpur union and one on 2,000 acres in Gazipur.
