An expatriate's thoughts
Abdul M Ismail, UK
As an expatriate born and educated in the UK, I am working relentlessly to try and use my know-how to return to Bangladesh and assist in development related activities. In preparation of relocation, I read your online paper religiously and have also tried hard to understand the logic behind why Bangladesh is in the state it's in today. The AL won the elections due to its popularity during pre-Independence War period. Mujib loved his country and genuinely thought his policies were working but those below him were not carrying out his instructions and involved themselves in massive corruption using Mujib's name. In order to promote national reconciliation, the AL pardoned many who sided with Pakistan, but refused some citizenship. The AL made a serious mistake by constituting the army prior to return of many senior ranking officers stranded in (West) Pakistan during the war, causing deep resentment between the freedom fighters and repatriated officers which may have led to instability in the army. Today the population has become totally disenchanted with the AL, BNP and JP and have started to support anti-liberation forces hence the reason why the BNP required the assistance of the Jamaat to form government. The major parties should realise where they have gone wrong.
