SEC to sue 6 staff for false info

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) yesterday asked Premier Bank Ltd Managing Director Kazi Abdul Mazid to send particulars of six officials of his bank who gave false data to the commission's probe. Mazid was instructed to furnish the capital market watchdog with the fathers' names, joining dates, present and permanent addresses and attested pictures of the officials by tomorrow, sources said. The SEC will take legal action against these officials, who it alleged hid information as well as provided false data to its investigators. The officials are Premier Bank Executive Vice-President (EVP) and Motijheel Branch manager Dewan Anwarul Latif, EVP Abdul Hai at head office, VP and Banani Branch manager Syed Nowsher Ali, Senior Officer Shafiul Alam, and management trainees Momtazul Haque and Kazi Iftekhar Hossain. Sources said the step has been also been initiated due to the officials' involvement in opening fake beneficiary owners' (BO) accounts which is a criminal offence." The SEC on February 12 suspended a Tk 55 crore public floating of Premier Bank after around 25,000 BO accounts suspected to be fake had been found in an investigation. A SEC probe found that 15,000 BO accounts were opened by Premier Bank's depository participant using a single address. Another 3,000 accounts also had another lone address, while about 5,500 BO accounts did not have any address al all. The central bank in its separate investigations into the probe also detected a number of irregularities in opening of a huge number of bank accounts with Premier Bank. There are also allegations that the Premier Bank board of directors chairman put pressure on different branch managers to open a huge number of accounts and MD Mazid was involved in it.
