Tamabil port opens after 8 days
Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
Imports of coal and other goods through Tamabil resumed yesterday afternoon after eight days' suspension that caused Bangladesh huge revenue losses.Work at Tamabil Land Port stopped when Indian exporters went on a strike on February 24. The strike action was taken after Indian Border Security Force (BSF) had allegedly harassed some Indian truck drivers transporting coal and other goods to Tamabil. About 250 trucks remained stranded at Tamabil in the Bangladesh territory and at Dauki land port across the border while some 2000 labourers remained jobless. The Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry submitted a memorandum to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Thursday requesting steps to break the stalemate. Tamabil is the main land port for importing coal. Through it, Bangladesh imports about 1500 tonnes of coal every day from Indian state of Meghalaya, general secretary of Coal Importers Group, Sylhet said. Meanwhile, operation at the Sutarkandi Land Custom Station remained suspended for the third consecutive day yesterday. The snap at the land port started after a coal-laden Indian truck plunged into a canal damaging an already run-down steel bridge on the way to Sutarkandi on Thursday. Since then some 100 trucks have remained stranded near the LC station.
