3 die as lift crashes at RMG factory


Three men died and one critically injured in an elevator crash at a garment factory in Tejgaon Industrial area last evening.

The dead were identified as Jalil, lift-man aged around 25, Joinal, a labourer of 27,and Shyamol, 25. The injured, Liton, 22, is also a labourer and works for the garment factory. His condition was reported to be critical.

The three labourers were carrying down goods on a cargo-lifting elevator from the ninth floor of Urmi Group Limited at 235/B Tejgaon I/A when the elevator fell to the ground tearing the strings at around 6:30pm.

Doctors declared Jalal dead at 7:20pm as locals rushed all four to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Joinal passed away half an hour after the admission while Shyamol died at about 11:45pm.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old Kamrul Islam Shuvo, a grade three student of an English medium school at Badda, was injured in a bomb blast at Middle Badda yesterday afternoon.

Shuvo, son of Tajul Islam of 976 Post Office Lane, Middle Badda, while playing cricket in front of his house along with his mates, stepped on two cocktails abandoned near a bin in the lane causing the blast at around 4:30pm. He was injured in the thighs and stomach, said witnesses. He was rushed to the DMCH.
