Awami Jubo League, a front organisation of the Awami League, staged a demonstration in the city yesterday demanding proper supply of gas, water and electricity and steps to bring down the prices of essentials. As part of the demonstration, the leaders and workers in a procession were marching towards the Wasa head office at Karwan Bazar to lay a siege, but the police intercepted them at Green Road- Panthapath intersection. Earlier, they held a rally in front of the Bangabandhu memorial museum at Dhanmondi. Addressing the rally, AL leader Mohammed Nasim strongly criticised the government for its failure to ensure proper supply of gas, electricity and water. The government took no steps in the last three and a half years to meet the increasing demand for gas, electricity and water, he said, adding that business and academic activities are being hampered seriously due to frequent power outages. "Even the government is asking the shop owners to keep the shutters down after dusk," said Nasim. He also said the prices of essentials have soared beyond the reach of the common people but the government is doing nothing to check the price hike. Jubo League President Jahangir Kabir Nanak said farmers could not irrigate their lands due to acute power crisis while the ministers are engaged in plundering nation's wealth. Jubo League General Secretary Mirza Azam MP also spoke at the rally.
