Say no to GMOs
Speakers tell roundtable

World Consumers' Rights Day was observed yesterday across the world as well as here at home with a call not to use Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) products since it is harmful for the seeds, crops, foods, nature, environment and human bodies.Consumers Association of Bangladesh (Cab) organised a roundtable at the Cirdap auditorium to mark of the day where speakers emphasised on creating mass awareness about the GMOs. They urged the government to enact a law forcing the traders to distinguish the GMO products from others so that the consumers can easily identify the GMOs. "We would take stern steps against the GMOs once it is confirmed that it is hazardous, but we are still uncertain whether the effect of GMO is positive or negative, Information Minister M Shamsul Islam told the reporters. We are not against modern technologies but we should try to use them for the welfare of human being, said Abdul Awal Minto, president of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Few of the speakers, including Dr Samsur Ali of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Wahidul Rahman of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Institute (Badi) and Dr Ruhul Hossain, however, disagreed with the idea that the GMOs have negative effects. Kalilur Rahman Sajal presented the keynote paper while the roundtable was also addressed by Farida Akhtar of Naya Krishi Anodolon.
