Students suffer as JU dining hall staff on strike

The first day of the three-day work abstention programme, enforced by the Dining Hall Employees Association (DHEA) of Jahangirnagar University (JU) demanding regularisation of their jobs, was observed peacefully throughout the campus yesterday.

To drum up supports to their one point demand, about 160 employees working at the dinning halls of 10 different dormitories, including those at the female dormitories on temporary basis since 1972, brought out several processions on the campus yesterday demanding regularization of their jobs.

Despite repeated movements in the past, these employees are being forced to work here 11 to 15 hours a day at a very poor salary, ranging from Tk 850 to 1350 a month.

Because of the programme, students have been facing troubles having lunch and dinner although the university authorities have asked the cooks of the respective halls and several sick boys to get the job going without any assurance of overtime payment for their unscheduled and long working hours, sources said.
