PDB office besieged in Satkhira, broom procession in Debhata for electricity

Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Satkhira brought out a procession in the town and held a rally in front of the Power Development Board (PDB) office yesterday protesting severe load shedding and demanding smooth power supply.About 300 activists of BCL, opposition Awami League's student front, started the procession from its office premises. The rally was presided over by Satkhira BCL President Kazi Akhtar Hossain and was addressed by, among others, Sheikh Maruf Hassan Mithu, Abdul Mannan, Asaduzzaman and Rashiduzzaman. The speakers said, PDB failed ensure smooth power supply at a time when SSC (Secondary School Certificate) examination is going on and farmers are crying for power to irrigate their Irri-Boro lands. They said a tougher agitation will be launched if load shedding is not stopped within a week. They also demanded resignation of the 'failed and corrupt government'. In another incident, two employees of Rural Electrification Board (REB) were assaulted by agitated people at Gazirhat in Debhata upazila on Monday due to frequent load shedding persisting in the district. REB linemen Masud Mia and Asadur Rahman came under attack when they went to repair displaced wires, Debhata thana OC Mawla Box said. In Shyamnagar, people brought out a broom procession at the upazila headquarters on the same day demanding smooth power supply to IRRI-Boro lands. They also held a rally, addressed by, among others, Shyamnagore Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Jaglul Haidar.
