Appeal against Ghalib's remand rejected

Repeatedly placing an accused on police remand for interrogation, not exceeding 15 days at a stretch, is valid in the law of the land, the High Court (HC) ruled yesterday, dismissing summarily a petition filed for suspected top militant Dr Asadullah Al-Galib.

A bench comprising Justices AK Badrul Huq and M Fazlur Rahman passed the order, directing the government to ensure access to Dr Galib by lawyers and his family members.

Chief of Ahle Hadith Andolan Bangladesh and top leader of the now-outlawed Jamaatul Mujahi-deen, Galib has been held incommunicado on repeated remand for 10 days twice with a gap of three days since he was arrested on February 23.

The government launched the crackdown on suspected Islamist outfits in the wake of outcries at home and abroad over recent series of bomb and grenade blasts.

A good number of followers of Dr Galib thronged the court to know the fate of their supremo, witnesses said.
