JCD, BCL move to oust Shibir from DU halls
Shibir men gather on campus

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and other student organisations continued their operations to oust Islami Chhatra Shibir activists from different dormitories of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday.

At least six Shibir activists were beaten up at two halls until 11:00pm yesterday by the JCD and BCL men. On Tuesday, three Shibir men were beaten up on the campus by the activists of six opposition-backed student organisations led by BCL.

Campus sources said the JCD activists were searching the Shibir men at different dormitories till filing this report at 11:30pm.

Tension was running high at different dormitories after the BNP-backed JCD and Awami League supported BCL men moved to oust the Shibir men. Huge contingents of police have been deployed on the campus to avert any untoward situation.

Yesterday's anti-Shibir drive was a sequel to the clash between Jamaat-e-Islami backed Shibir and JCD-BCL activists on the Jagannath University College campus on March 9.

JCD activists of Jashimuddin Hall drove away Shibir hall unit President Delwar Hossain and two activists Manjurul and Majedul after beating them up at about 9:00pm. Delwar was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

A group of BCL and JCD activists of Jahurul Haque Hall beat up three Shibir activists -- Monayem, Abdullah and Farook Ahmed -- and ousted them from the hall in the early hours yesterday.

Asked, JCD President Azizul Bari Helal told The Daily Star last night that they have not given any directive to its leaders and activists to oust the Shibir men. He, however, said no 'outsiders' would be allowed to stay in the DU halls.

Prof Zahidul Islam, provost of the hall, told The Daily Star they will form an investigation committee to probe the matter. He admitted the incident and said he had reinstated one ousted Shibir worker in his room.

Meanwhile, the Shibir men in their first public appearance on the DU campus in recent times yesterday submitted a memorandum to the university vice chancellor demanding expulsion of the seven BCL leaders and activists including its DU unit President Delwar Hossain for beating up three Shibir men on Tuesday.

More than a hundred Shibir activists gathered at the Mall Chattar in front of DU registrar building under police protection. Campus sources said members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) were also seen in the area. Tension mounted when a group of BCL activists went to the Mall Chattar.

In the memorandum Shibir demanded action against BCL men Ishtak Ahmed Shimul, Nazmul, Tarek, Mizan, Alamgir Hasan and Kawser. Shibir's DU unit President Mohammad Belal Hossain also filed a case with Ramna Police Station against the seven BCL leaders and activists.

Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz confirmed that he received the memorandum. "I would sent it to the proctor to give his opinion," he said.

Meanwhile, the six opposition-backed student organisations yesterday staged demonstration protesting the Shibir activities in educational institutions. Addressing a rally on the campus, the student leaders demanded a ban on Jamaat-Shibir politics.

BCL President Liaqat Sikder said progressive students would resist any attempt of Shibir activists to do politics in the educational institutions including DU.

A group of JCD men of Jashimuddin Hall yesterday beat up a resident student of the hall who is also a reporter of daily Samachar. Mofizul Islam Mofiz, a masters' student of Political Science was rushed to the Dhaka medical College Hospital (DMCH) with severe injuries.
