Adivasi Cultural Festival '05 begins
Showcasing our cultural diversity
For those with a taste for diversified cultural heritage, there are glad tidings. A three-day Adivasi grand cultural festival opens today at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The function will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the multifarious indigenous people--Mandi, Rakhain, Chakma, Khashi, Monipuri, Oraon, Marma and Tripura, among others. Around 200 Adivasis will make the journey to Dhaka for the performance.

There are other attractions: photographs portraying the distinctive lifestyle and artifacts used by the people of these communities.

The Adivasi cultural festival has been organised by the Society for Environment and Human Development (SEHD) with assistance from 21 Adivasi cultural groups and non-governmental organisations. "The festival is an assembly of Adivasis and others. It is also a celebration of life and cultural diversity," says the SEHD brochure. Through cultural insights into the Adivasi ways of life, the masses will have a better understanding of these indigenous people.
