Muktis' precious victory in AFC Cup

Country's sleepy football got a Muktijoddha boost yesterday when the Reds scored a 1-0 away victory over Nebetchi FC in their AFC Cup clash in Balkanabad, Turkmenistan.

Enamul, a young recruit signed from Fakirerpool this year, struck the all-important goal seven minutes from the final whistle, according to a message received here last night.

This is a significant success by a Bangladeshi club in a tournament, which is the second most important club event in Asia. The last time a Bangladeshi club made an impact at the top level was when Mohammedan beat Iranian giants Piruzzi at home and stunned April 25 of North Korea in the final round of the Asian Club Championship in 1985.

The stunning Muktijoddha victory, their first in the competition after a goalless draw against Kolkata giant East Bengal and a 3-0 home defeat to Jordan's Al Faysali, raised hopes for a berth into the next round from Group A.

The result left Muktijoddha on equal four points with Nebetchi, who had earlier drawn 1-1 with Al Faysali and defeated East Bengal 3-2.

Muktijoddha now have the advantage of playing home matches against Nebetchi on April 20 and East Bengal on April 25. Their last group match is against Al Faysali away on May 25.
