Sammilito Nari Samaj, a women's association, yesterday blamed the garment factory owner and also the government agencies which approve constructions for the factory collapse at Savar on Monday.Factory owners are too preoccupied with their own interests to be concerned about the security of the workers, they said at a demonstration rally in front of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) "How can a building collapse only three years after its construction if it is constructed following proper rules," questioned Farida Akhter, executive director of the NGO, Ubinig. She demanded immediate identification of all the faulty factory buildings for the safety of the workers. The women leaders demanded of the BGMEA to take full responsibility of the families who suffered in the tragedy, including treatment of the injured and rehabilitation of the workers who lost their jobs. "Previous instances prove factory owners never fulfil the promises made immediately after accidents," Sammilito Nari Samaj Convenor Sima Das Simu said. Garment owners seemed to be very anxious about the loss of many jobs after the Multi-fibre Agreement, but a worker's wage, working hour and working conditions tell another story. The women leaders, after the demonstration, met the BGMEA President Annisul Huq and placed their demands. "He said the BGMEA would take concrete decisions in a board meeting today," Farida Akhter told The Daily Star. "We don't believe in empty promises, but want their implementation. This time we are going to monitor every promise made," she emphasised. Women leaders Arifa Haque Banu and Sultana Akter Rubi also spoke at the rally.
