Dhaka to press for more jobs in Qatar
Emir arrives tomorrow

Dhaka will request the emir of Qatar to increase recruitment of manpower from Bangladesh during the official talks between the two heads of government on Friday.

Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani is arriving in Dhaka Thursday on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh.

He will be accompanied by a 65 member high-powered delegation including his Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasim bin Jabar Al Thani.

Two memoranda of understanding (MoU) are likely to be signed between Dhaka and Doha during the emir's visit.

The oil rich Middle Eastern country now requires huge manpower recruitment as it has undertaken massive construction work for holding 15th Asian Games in Doha in the middle of 2006.

During the official talks between the emir and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Friday, State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Mohammad Quamrul Islam and high officials of two sides will be present.

They will discuss bilateral issues and try to reach an understanding on avoiding double taxation and formation of a joint business council.

Dhaka will request Doha to ease the visa issuance process as several thousand more Bangladeshis can be recruited there for construction related work.

Dhaka will also request Doha to increase import of tea, jute goods and other commodities, sources said.

Currently over 60,000 Bangladeshis working in the oil rich country send a handsome amount every month. Remittances from Qatar in January and February this year were $12.3 and $9.4 million.

Oil rich Qatar regularly employs foreign workers who have already outnumbered the 6,19,000 Qatar citizens.
