CCC Polls
19 papers valid for mayoral post

The Election Commission after scrutiny here yesterday cancelled four nomination papers out of 23 submitted for the mayoral post for Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls scheduled for May 9.

Besides, the commission cancelled 13 nomination papers out of 87 submitted for reserved seats of women commissioners and 26 out of 394 for ward commissioner (general) posts, sources said.

The four intending mayoral candidates who got their nomination papers cancelled are: Moulana Abul Hashem Zehadi (Jagrata Muslim Ummah Oikya Parishad), Dilip Bhadra (Sangskritik Jote), Nurul Alam Chowdhury (independent) and MA Salam (independent).

Meanwhile, despite having 4-party alliance nomination in three wards, Jamaat-e-Islami, an alliance partner, filed nomination papers for twenty candidates for ward commissioner posts to the discontent of BNP - the main component of the alliance.

Jamaat sources said it was a strategy to press the alliance to offer Jamaat more nominations for ward commissioner posts.

Jatiya Party, which did not get any alliance nomination, filed nomination for commissioner posts in five wards while Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ -Izhar) submitted nomination paper for commissioner post only in the ward (Lalkhan Bazar) where it got alliance nomination.

In most of the wards several candidates from both BNP and Awami League filed nomination papers for contesting the CCC polls for commissioner posts.
