ETV gets fresh licence

The government yesterday issued a fresh licence to the now defunct Ekushey Television (ETV), the country's first private terrestrial television channel, paving the way for resumption of its operation.

It can only pursue satellite transmission under the new licence, sources mentioned.

ETV earlier had both terrestrial and satellite transmissions but shut down its operations on August 29, 2002, following a Supreme Court verdict.

The information ministry on Monday issued a licence to National Television. BNP lawmaker Mossaddeq Ali Falu is the chairman of the company.

Mossaddeq is also the chairman of private channel NTV.

The information ministry has granted licences to five companies since the BNP-led four-party alliance came to power.

The ministry still has many applications seeking licences for private television channels. Many others having such licences are yet to start operation due to a lack of technical facilities and frequencies, sources said.
