None of 6 accused arrested yet

Depositors continued to crowd postal savings banks in Gaibandha yesterday either to withdraw money or check their accounts. "The panic is gone and account holders are satisfied after inquiry, but many depositors are still coming to banks", Gaibandha Post Master Amjad Hossain told this correspondent yesterday. But large numbers of depositors were seen at the head post office and branches at upazilas. None of six persons accused of postal scam could be arrested till yesterday. Police said they are hunting them down in all possible places but are yet to nab any one. Meanwhile relatives were seen removing furniture and household appliances from houses of accused persons to avoid probable attachment, witnesses said. Police said they interrogated Shamsuzzoha Sumon, son of Golam Nabi, one of the accused persons, but could not know anything about where he is now. Sumon was detained in Bogra postal savings bank on Sunday when he had gone to withdraw money. He was sent to Gaibandha, where police arrested him. Golam Nabi's wife, son and daughter have Tk 12 lakh term deposits with Bogra postal savings bank, sources said . So far, defalcation of over Tk one crore from depositors' accounts has been detected at Gaibandha post office. Reliable sources said most of the accused have meanwhile withdrawn money from their accounts as those were not freezed.
