Independence Day Football
Final to be replayed today

The replay of the final of the Independence Day Gold Cup football tournament between Muktijoddha Sangsad and Brothers Union will take place at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.

The clash of the country's two current powerhouses, which had been postponed after 13 minutes due to heavy rain on March 30, will kick off at 3:45pm with state-run Bangladesh Television telecasting the match live.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is expected to witness the final and distribute prizes. The final will roll directly into a tiebreaker if the match fails to produce a result in the scheduled 90 minutes.

Muktijoddha, who had swallowed a goal in those 13 minutes were in an upbeat mood in this fresh encounter as they had recorded a brilliant 1-0 away victory against Nebitchi FC of Turkmenistan in an AFC Cup game in between.

The Reds will be boosted by the return of striker Moni and midfielder Pappu from one match suspensions.

But there was bad news in the Brothers camp as they will miss Russian striker Edward who had scored the goal in the postponed final. Edward is suffering from heat-related allergy.
