Khilgaon Flyover
Protest against faulty construction

Thousands of residents of the city's greater Khilgaon and Malibagh areas yesterday formed an hour-long human chain from the Malibagh Super Market to the Khilgaon flyover protesting the alleged faulty construction of the Khilgoan flyover.

They also demanded the construction of the second loop of the flyover towards Sabujbagh for the benefit of the residents of Khilgoan, Tilpapara, Rampura and Hajipara.

"Although the flyover has the name Khilgaon attached to it, people of Khilgaon cannot reap full benefit from it," Awami League (AL) Chief Sheikh Hasina's Political Secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury told reporters.

The Khilgaon flyover project was initiated during the AL rule, but the change of government also brought a change in the model of the structure when one loop towards Sabujbagh was dropped, making the flyover 'incomplete', he viewed.

"The Khilgaon residents still cannot use the flyover for going to Motijheel via Shahjahanpur because of the absence of the loop," Saber Hossain alleged.

He also added, the flyover was completed only after 55 months though its completion was scheduled within 30 months of the launch of the project.

"The LGRD Minister's speech during the inauguration of the flyover where he sought the PM's assistance to construct the second loop for benefiting Khilgaon residents proves the shortcomings of the flyover," Saber asserted.

"Development of communication infrastructure is the pre-condition for an area's overall development, but Khilgaon will remain an underprivileged area as its people cannot enjoy the facilities of the flyover," he added

He promised construction of the second loop if the Awami League returns to power.

AL leaders Mohammad Hanif, Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Asaduzzaman Nur also joined the human chain.
