French journo remanded

A French freelance TV journalist, held by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) while entering Bangladesh without a passport in the early hours of Friday, was taken on an eight-day remand yesterday and sent to Dhaka for interrogation.BDR personnel caught Manda Garan, 55, and his Indian guide Mofizul Islam on Bhomra border and handed them over to the police. During preliminary interrogation, Manda Garan told police that he came to Bangladesh on February 26 with a valid visa for five months. Later he went to India through Benapole border to make a documentary on Babri Mosque. He returned to Bangladesh through Bhomra border at about 1:00am on Friday. He further said that he came to Dhaka to go to India as Indian government refused him visa. He had earlier visited India thrice and made documentaries on communal situation including demolition of Babri Mosque, which were widely televised.
