Imam training programme launched

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and The Asia Foundation yesterday launched the 'Leaders Outreach Initiatives,' a programme to enhance the role of imams in the national development efforts.

The programme will expand the understanding of the imams, as persons of influence in the society, on development topics to enable them to raise public awareness about development goals and facilitate greater participation of the people in development activities, said a USAID press release.

Over the next 18 months, around 5,000 imams from across the country will complete a three-day orientation session at the Imam Training Academy at different towns units.

Secretary of Ministry of Religious Affairs Rafiqul Islam and USAID Mission Director Gene V George addressed the launching ceremony.

Chaired by the Director of Islamic Foundation of Bangladesh Shamsul Alam, the programme was also addressed by Director of Imam Training Academy Muhammad Nurul Amin, Asia Foundation Representative Kim McQuay and Nurul Islam.
