Govt finds no proof of int'l terrorists links: FM

Foreign Minister (FM) M Morshed Khan yesterday said the government did not find any evidence or proof that local goons have any connection with the international terrorists.

"Even then, we think preparedness is always good," he told reporters at his office.

His comments came the day after US Army Pacific Commander Admiral William J Fallon indicated that there might be some connections of international terrorists here.

"Bangladesh is a democratic, liberal and moderate Muslim country. We have kept it in our mind so that terrorists can not rise here," the FM said.

"We do not want reemergence of anything like the Golden Triangle," he said, adding, "We requested the USA for fast boats and gunships so that our coast guard can be made well-equipped to tackle anything unwanted."

Khan said the government has enacted money-laundering act to prevent use of money from the terrorist networks.

"We have recently ratified 11 conventions on terrorism. We are also sincere about information sharing," he said.

Khan said the government has already banned two organisations for their possible links to criminal acts in the name of religion and arrested a number of their followers.
