Khaleda stresses steps against risky, illegal structures

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday asked the authorities to identify risky buildings in all parts of the country, including the capital, and take necessary measures to reduce the risks of life."It has become imperative to take effective measures against risky buildings and illegal structures," the prime minister said, in the wake of recent quakes, tidal surges and storms. She asked the authorities concerned to ensure proper fire-extinguishing systems in all high-rise buildings as well as fire and emergency exits for children and elderly people. She was addressing the inaugural function of Sthapatya Bhaban (Architecture Building) of the Department of Architecture at Segun Bagicha in the capital. The prime minister reminded country's architects and engineers of the risk of earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and tidal surges and advised them to give due importance to structural design and planning in constructing multistoried buildings, bridges and heavy infrastructures. Her suggestion bears a sense of urgency prompted by the inadequacy of skill and equipment found in the rescue operation after the collapse of a nine-storey garment building in Savar recently. Architecture reflects the geographical and environmental position, nation's culture and social aspects and civilization. Architecture is an art that lives beyond time in real sense, the prime minister said. Architects leave behind signs of their talent, acumen and experience for the next generations, she added Presided over by Secretary of the Housing and Public Works Ministry Iqbaluddin Chowdhury, the function was also addressed by Minister for Housing and Public Works Mirza Abbas, State Minister Alamgir Kabir, Chief Architect Abdus Salam and Chief Engineer Manzurul Islam. The prime minister unveiled the plaque of the Sthapatya Bhaban built at a cost of over Tk 7.01 crore. Ministers, political leaders and a large number of architects and engineers attended the function.
