Dhaka seeks US help to combat sea piracy

Bangladesh has sought US logistic support to forestall reemergence of the golden triangle by combating terrorists and pirates in the high terrain and the coastal belt, Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan said.Talking to reporters at his office yesterday, Khan said the government sought helicopters and high-speed boats to enhance the capacity of the law enforcers and coastguards during his meeting with US Pacific Commander Admiral William Fallon. "We have kept our strong vigil so that a new golden triangle cannot emerge," he said, adding that the coastguard will be strengthened to keep the country's coast and territorial waters safe. The borderland connecting three countries--Laos, Thailand and Myanmaris popularly known as golden triangle for smuggling of drugs and arms. Bangladesh has cooperation with major countries for sharing information about international terrorists. "But our friends have not given us any information about the presence of any international terrorists in the country apart from local goons and gangsters," the foreign minister told the newsmen. He said Bangladesh has already ratified 11 of 12 UN anti-terrorism conventions and enacted Anti-Money Laundering Act to prevent illegal transaction of money by terrorist outfits. "The government is determined to crush any terrorist organisation and has already banned two outfits and arrested many of their activists," said the foreign minister. He said US assistance was also sought for enhanced capacity building through training and getting equipped for tackling natural disaster like cyclone and tsunami in future.
