Govt lacking in protecting people's rights Says Saifur

Finance and Planning Minister M Saifur Rahman at an inter-ministerial meeting yesterday noted that the government is lacking in protecting the basic rights of people.

At the meeting at the National Economic Council auditorium that discussed civic amenities in Dhaka, Saifur expressed frustration over poor supply of water, electricity and other amenities in the capital.

He referred to the Savar garment factory collapse and regretted that the government does not have the necessary equipment to rescue people in such a situation.

Land is being gobbled up and buildings are illegally constructed without any planning, the finance minister said, adding that various government agencies seriously lack good governance.

"People do not have an ounce of trust in Rajuk. Buildings without Rajuk's approval are sprawling up everywhere while you can see illegally constructed high rises in areas where Rajuk has put the maximum limit for construction to six storeys," he said.

About the recent European Union resolution on Bangladesh, Saifur said, "Who are they to adopt any resolution on Bangladesh?"

"They talked about human rights violation and governance issues in Bangladesh. But Bangladesh is a small country with an enormous population. It's very difficult for any government to ensure people's rights and good governance," he added.
