'BNP union meets infuse new dynamism into politics'

Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday said her party's countrywide programme of union representatives infused new dynamism into politics and inspired grassroots-level leaders."It will not only play a great role in our party activities but also have an effective and positive impact on Bangladesh's politics in general," she said. Khaleda was speaking at a function arranged to hand over to her the recommendations of the BNP's union representative meetings. Receiving the report at the International Conference Centre, she thanked all leaders and activists of her party for the successful completion of the conferences held between January 4 and March 29. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Chief Coordinator of the Central Coordination Committee for Union Representative Meetings (CCCURM) Tarique Rahman handed over a set of recommendations to the party chief. The recommendations were prepared on the basis of the opinions of the union representatives who made their observations during some 20 meetings. The report carried 69 recommendations in 14 sectors on three different components, including government and organisational affairs and national politics. Khaleda asked the standing committee to hold a meeting immediately to discuss the recommendations with a view to implementing those gradually. She also asked the leaders to take initiative for holding such conferences of BNP front organisations across the country formulating a guideline for smooth holding of the conferences. BNP Joint Secretary General Abdullah Al Noman, Mirza Abbas, PM's political secretary Harris Chowdhury and PM's press secretary Tajul Islam were present at the meeting. The CCCURM now stands dissolved following the completion of the grassroots conferences. Later briefing newsmen, BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said that the government had already implemented some of the recommendations while the rest would be put to work gradually. Tarique Rahman said every political party has some commitments for the wellbeing of the countrymen and has a manifesto. "Our intention is to work for the wellbeing of the people and we also want that people's views should be reflected in government policies," he said. "We have limitations of wealth, but with the cooperation of the people we can overcome those constraints through exchanging views and such organisational activities that would continue," he told reporters. Sources said a political recommendation was to make parliament more effective and to talk to the opposition parliament members.
