Attack on Ahmadiyyas condemned

Different human rights organisations and political parties yesterday strongly condemned the Sunday's attack on Ahmadiyya community in Satkhira by the religious bigots of the International Khatme Nabuwat Movement Bangladesh (IKNMB) that left over 50 injured.In separate statements, the leaders of the organisations asked the government to take legal actions against the bigots, and ensure safety of Ahmadiyya people. They were also critical of the role of police during the attack when the law enforcers helped bigots hang a banner that reads 'This is a place of worship for Kadianis, no Muslim should mistake it for a mosque'. The leaders of South Asian People's Union Against Fundamentalism and Communalism and Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee (An organisation to eliminate collaborators of 1971 Liberation War), in a joint statement, said local lawmaker of the ruling coalition partner Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh led the attack. "The International Khatme Nabuwat Movement, based in Pakistan, has a link with the Jamaat, and they have made repeated attacks on the Ahmadiyyas in Chittagong, Khulna, Patuakhali and Bogra. The government must take decisive action against them," the statement added. The leaders expressed their solidarity with the Ahmadiyya people of Satkhira who are passing days in great insecurity. The signatories to the statement included Prof Kabir Chowdhury, Barrister Shawkat Ali Khan, Justice KM Sobhan, Advocate Gaziul Haq, poet Shamsur Rahman, Prof Borhanuddin Khan Jahangir, Barrister Shafique Ahmed, journalist Kamal Lohani, Prof Hasan Azizul Haq, author Syed Shamsul Haque, Prof Ajay Roy, writer Shahriar Kabir and Prof Muntasir Mamun. Besides, Jatiya Ainjibi Parishad, Karmojibi Nari, Odhikar, Sammilito Samajik Andolon and Ain O Salish Kendra, in a joint statement, criticised the administration for its failure to protect the Ahmadiyya community of Satkhira when the religious fanatics attacked them through prior announcement. Leaders of left 11-party alliance also condemned the attack and accused the BNP-Jamaat-led coalition of patronising the anti-Ahmadiyya elements.
