8 youths get 60 years' RI for keeping arms


A Dhaka court has sentenced eight youths to 60 years' rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.

.The convicts are Myna alias Ali Hossain, Iqbal alias Lengra Iqbal, Mohammad Reza, Mohammad Raja, Jakir Hossain, Mohammad Akash and Mohammad Jibon.

Judge Mohammad Rabiul Hassan of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court on Sunday pronounced the verdict in presence of the convicts.

After cross-examination of 12 prosecution witnesses, the court handed down the judgement.

According to the prosecution, acting on a tip-off Sutrapur Police arrested eight youths at about 10:30am on July 24 last year from different houses of the area when they were making attempts to commit offences and recovered six revolvers and 20 bullets from their possession.

Later, two cases were filed against them with Sutrapur Police Station under the Arms Act. The investigation officer pressed charges against them on August 7 the same year.

Assistant Public prosecutor Shahidul Islam Sarder appeared for the state while Advocate Lutful Kabir defended the accused.
