A massive rickshaw procession was brought out in the port city yesterday in favour of ruling four-party alliance candidate in tomorrow's CCC polls Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, violating the election code of conduct.According to the code of conduct, an election procession with vehicles and water transport is a punishable act. Several thousand empty rickshaws keeping their passenger seats vacant and carrying election posters of Mir Nasir paraded the main thoroughfares. The rickshaw-pullers chanted slogans asking people to cast votes in favour of Nasir. The procession during a busy afternoon created traffic congestion at different important crossings in the city. The rickshaw-pullers started the procession from the Outer Stadium and after parading the city concluded the march at the same venue. According to sources, each rickshaw-puller was given Tk 200 for participating in the procession. When asked, the rickshaw-pullers said they did not get anything but their owners were given money. "I joined the procession as the owner of my rickshaw asked me to do so. I have heard that he received money but I am yet to get," said Jasim Uddin, a rickshaw-puller. The election campaigners of Mir Nasir claimed that the rickshaw-pullers brought out the procession spontaneously. But they also said they have given the rickshaw-pullers "remuneration" for the participation. Asked whether it was a violation of election code of conduct, a public relations officer at Mir Nasir's election camp said, "It was very insignificant violation. Mohiuddin violated more election code of conduct than we did."
