Sharapova, Mauresmo reach last 16

Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo crushed Australian Samantha Stosur to reach the last 16 of the Rome Masters on Wednesday.

Second seed Mauresmo, who last month was forced to withdraw from Warsaw and France's Fed Cup match against Austria due to an abdominal injury, showed no signs of discomfort in a trouble-free 6-2, 6-0 second round victory.

Ranked third in the world and making her seventh appearance here, Mauresmo will face either Italian 13th seed Silvia Farina Elia or French compatriot Stephanie Cohen-Aloro in round three.

Argentinian 20-year-old Gisela Dulko caused an upset by knocking out Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva.

Dulko, ranked 37th in the world, hit 34 winners in her 7-5, 6-4 win over the 2004 French and US Open runner-up.

Dementieva, 23, appeared to be restricted by the left hip injury that forced her to withdrew from Berlin last week.

Dulko will play either Italian Flavia Pennetta or Russia's Evgenia Linetskaya in the next round.

Earlier on Tuesday, top seed Maria Sharapova reached the last 16 but her Russian compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova failed to join her in round three.

Sharapova, who as one of the top eight seeds was given a first round bye, beat Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 6-2, while fifth seed Kuznetsova was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Argentinian doubles specialist Paola Suarez.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Sharapova, who hit 32 winners but made 26 unforced errors, admitted there was plenty of room for improvement after a patchy second round performance riddled with mistakes.

Serbian Ana Ivanovic defeated French 12th seed Golovin 6-3, 6-4, while Israel's Anna Smashnova beat Russian 11th seed Likhovtseva 6-1, 6-3.

Slovakian 16th seed Hantuchova lost 6-1, 6-2 to Croatian Sanda Mamic.

Spain's Conchita Martinez, a four-time Rome champion, beat Angela Haynes of the United States to claim a second round place, while Japanese 15th seed Ai Sugiyama ousted Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva to make the last 32.
