DU soil deptt teachers begin strike

Teachers of the soil, water and environment department of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday began an indefinite strike demanding removal of its chairman.

They put the rooms of the chairman Prof Mohammad Khurshid Alam and departmental office under lock and key.

The teachers also posted posters at the department that reads 'No more with this ill-mannered chairman. We demand his immediate removal.'

The teachers threatened to continue the strike until their demand is met.

Talking to newsmen at the department, the teachers said they have gone to strike as the chairman, at an Academic Council (AC) Committee meeting on Tuesday, disclosed the name of a teacher to a newly appointed lecturer saying he gave 'Note of Decent' against his appointment.

They said the chairman could not disclose the name in front of the teacher as the selection committee is highly confidential.

The chairman, however, could not be reached for his comments immediately over telephone despite repeated attempts.

The VC told the reporters that he would take measurers after discussing the incidents with the dean of the faculty and senior teachers of the department at night.
