Poor idea

We came to know that the government has taken a step to involve the local lawmakers in the tax administration. This proposal came from the MPs and Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman accepted it without any scrutiny. He has ordered the National Board of Revenue to materialise this idea promptly. This news has perplexed all of us. We know that the MPs are elected for legislation. But they are very much reluctant to join the parliament. They interfere in civil administration and local government bodies. Reports say some of them even patronise hooliganism, nepotism and cronyism and like to evade tax. Most of the MPs of our country are business tycoons. They do not pay tax in time. So their involvement in tax collection will worsen corruption in our tax administration. I heard the interview of Abdul Awal Mintoo, President of FBCCI, on BBC. He opposed the move of the government outright. He blamed the MPs for tax evasion. He also asked all the MPs to pay due tax in time. It will boost the revenue collection of the government.

I am eager to concur with him. I implore the Honourable Finance Minister to withdraw the plan of brining MPs into the tax administration in the interest of all concerned.
