WB Immunity Bill
JS body to place report with note of approval

Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on finance ministry will submit a report recommending passing of the much-talked about bill that proposes immunity to the World Bank in its operation in Bangladesh when the parliament session resumes today after a two-day recess.

The bill, finalised on April 30 amid strong protest from the opposition, is likely to be passed in this session that will continue until May 17, sources at the parliament secretariat said.

Meanwhile, main opposition Awami League representative in the parliamentary body gave a note of dissent against the bill, terming it a violation of the constitution and democracy.

The bill was placed in parliament on October 31 last year amid widespread criticism by the opposition political parties, the civil society and rights groups.

The bill, titled The International Financial Organisations (Amendment) Act, 2005, proposes incorporating two new articles into The International Financial Organi-sations Order, 1972 (Presidential Order No 86 of 1972).

Copyright amendment bill is also likely to be passed in parliament today.
