BNP man killed in 'crossfire'
'Highway robber' dies in 'shootout'

A BNP man allegedly linked with outlaws was killed in 'crossfire' in Kushtia and an alleged highway robber died in a 'shootout' with police in Jhenidah yesterday.

Police said Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-6 on Friday night arrested Hasanuzzaman Babu alias Nata Babu from his house in Ailchara village in the sadar upazila, reports our Kushtia correspondent.

Babu, president of Ailchara unit BNP, admitted his involvement with outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party during interrogation at Kushtia Rab office, said a statement of the elite force.

A joint Rab-police team was taking him to Ballavpur village to seize his arms cache, and came under fire at around 3:00am, the police said.

The team countered the attack 'by outlaws' and Babu was bullet-hit while fleeing and died on the spot, they added. The police seized one foreign revolver, one shutter gun and 36 bullets.

Babu hailed from Ballavpur and was accused of eight criminal charges including two for murders, said the police.

In Jhenidah, Abdul Gani, 50, a resident of Chaklapara in the town, was found with bullet injuries following a police-robbers 'shootout', reports UNB.

Police said up to 12 highway robbers blockaded the road to commit robbery on vehicles near the BSCIC estate in the sadar upazila at around 2:30am.

The police said they rushed to the spot and ran into a hail of bullets. They repulsed the robbers and arrested bullet-hit Gani from the spot.

Accused in several robbery cases, Gani died at Kushtia General Hospital at noon yesterday.
