Democracy at stake as crossfire continues
WPB leader tells meeting

The future of democracy is at stake as the BNP-Jamaat alliance government is continuing its killing in the name of crossfire.

This was stated by Saiful Haque, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Bangladesh (WPB), while addressing a meeting at the party office in the city yesterday.

"Crossfire without allowing judicial probe is enforcing state terrorism. Government itself is neglecting the rule of law and making the judicial system ineffective and unnecessary," he added.

Terrorism cannot be uprooted without the termination of its sources, Saiful said, adding that the government's administrative investigation into the death in crossfire is just eyewash.

He demanded judicial probe of every death and urged all to be united to resist the politics of homicide.

Presided over by Akhtaruzza-man Azad, the rally was also addressed by party Politburo Member Paresh Chandra Saha, Central Committee Member Bohnishikha Jamali, Bimol Kanti Das, Dhaka City Committee Members Shamsunnahar Osmani, Selina Begum and Snigdha Sultana.

The meeting, in a resolution, also expressed deep concern over the price hike of essentials and urged the government to take necessary steps to tackle it.
