Expelled Habiganj AL leaders protest expulsion
UNB, Habiganj
The expelled president and general secretary of Habiganj district Awami League yesterday protested the decision of their expulsion from the party, saying it was "illegal and unconstitutional".When contacted for comment, they said their expulsion was unlawful and they would take measures against those who created the anarchy. A requisition meeting of Awami League Habiganj district committee on Thursday expelled its President Dr Mushfique Hossain Chowdhury and General Secretary Advocate Abu Zahir for their 'corruption, autocratic and anti-democratic activities'. Fifty-four members, out of 71, voted in favour of the decision to relieve the president and general secretary of the AL district committee from their posts. Hassain and Zahir were elected president and general secretary of the district committee in 2003. Abu Zahir was badly injured in the January 27 grenade attack that killed SAMS Kibria and five others at Baidder Bazaar. Sources said internal party feud sharply divided Awami League in the district after Kibria's killing.
